Thanks to my LVM setup it’s easy to make a live backup of the system.
For me it is important to have a copy of my home directory in the first place. So I recently made a snapshot of it and started my backup solution. After a while the program just stopped with a bunch of error messages (“Cannot read block … from small file …”) and a backup file with about one-hundred of the size of /home.
After a while I realized that it’s might not be a good idea to save the backup file in my /home directory itself, of which I made the snapshot. Due to that the space consumption of the snapshot was increasing to the limit, which caused LVM to just deactivate it and the backup to fail.
The conclusion is not to save the backup file on the device you backup, I guess. But this is obviously true… .
