Hello, Android – a summary

The last few days I had the time and opportunity to code a little bit with the Android SDK.  It was not always fun, sometimes annoying, but let me give a short summary of my experiences. Please refer to the documentation if you don’t know what I am talking about.

With the examples you find in the documentation you get first results fast. But sometimes the documentation misses important information, e.g., the tutorial for ListActivity . My application wasn’t working anymore after customizing the example. The error message wasn’t really helpful at all, only a comparison of my XML description and the one in the documentation helped me out.  At the end it was a simple attribute missing but even then it wasn’t clear why it is important.

Error messages can definitely become more helpful, at least, they should indicate if the problem is located in the code or in the XML description. Or maybe I should just get used toLogCat.

XML description of activities, menus and resources is a key concept and easy to use. It is easy just to modify a XML description to change the layout, to add new resources and to include that into the application. It is so easy that you don’t hesitate to modify the XML description directly via a text editor.

I also tried to include sound and video files. It is easy for sound files but I have problems with my video. Maybe I should also try some other video formats, ’cause I get sound but no video output.

Another issue is that the documentation misses a best practice example for inter-activity communication, or, in other words, the communication between different windows. It lists possible solutions but additional examples would be helpful. I just decided to use an awful, not clean, fast to implement solution and introduced a static field, shame on me… .

So, to get to an end, there are still issues for the application developer, issues the SDK can easily get rid of, I guess.

I hope they do because, after all, I really enjoyed coding with the SDK. Now, there are only nice devices missing… .

RFID und der Datenschutz

Letzte Woche hatten wir einen Vortrag, gehalten von einem Gastdozenten, über RFID, die Technik und dem Hype. Das Ergebis, um es kurz zu fassen, war, dass RFID mehr als Hype diskutiert wird, als denn als konkrete Technik. Es vermischt sich dadurch der Wunsch der überall Nachverfolgbarkeit von „logistischen Gütern“ mit der konkreten technischen Umsetzung. Das Beispiel mit dem Lager, in dem alles zu jedem Zeitpunkt verfolgbar ist, musste ich denn auch kommentieren. Ob ich nun an entscheidenden Punkten Barcode-Scanner aufstelle oder die ganze Halle mit RFID-Lesegeräten macht halt einen Unterschied und ob der Gewinn das Wert ist bezweifle ich. Man könnte das Gefühl bekommen die Herrschaften wünschen sich eher ein Telematik-Modul in klein, das vpn überall seine per GPS ermittelte Position über das gut ausgebaute Mobilfunk-Netz verbreitet… ist nur zu teuer.

Beim Thema Datenschutz und RFID machte der Vortragende darauf aufmerksam, dass die Diskussion doch ziemlich übertrieben bzw. emotionalisiert sei und die Datenschutzrichtlinien doch auch für die Verwendung bei RFID gelten würden. Er machte einen Vergleich zu den Mobilfunk-Betreibern, bei denen doch auch Daten anfallen, bei denen es aber die Meisten  nicht so genau nehmen würden. Dabei wird vergessen, dass jeder mit einem RFID-Lesegerät bewaffnet, und das muss nicht groß sein, aktive RFID-Tags auslesen kann. Bei einem Mobilfunkanbieter sollte sich dies (so hofft man),  aufgrund der einzuhaltenen Datenschutzrichtlinien deutlich schwieriger gestalten. Die Telekom hat bewiesen, dass man sich auf die Hoffnung allein nicht verlassen sollte und so ist das auch mit RFID-Tags. Daher ist es ein vernünftiger Schritt, dass alle Labels ab Verkauf deaktiviert werden müssen.

Bedenklich, wenn auch nachvollziehbar, fand ich die Meinung des Vortragenden, dass Menschen Gefahren ignorieren würden, solange der zu erhaltende Vorteil nur groß genug sei, wie z.B. beim Mobiltelefon. Dazu ist festzuhalten, dass es ein Fernmeldegeheimnis gibt, auch wenn so manche dran knabbern, dass weiterhin Gültigkeit besitzt, also gibt es dort idealerweise keinen Nachteil, aber, das gebe ich zu, ein Missbrauchspotential. Inwiefern schon alle Maßnahmen getroffen wurden, um dieses zu verringern, weiß ich nicht. Das ist sicherlich eine interessante Frage.

Ansonsten habe ich feuchte Wände und einen verstopften Balkonabfluss, also alles in bester Ordnung.
